Greetings list people.
The list has been very quiet recently but I have just started looking at
my USR wlan and I am wondering if it could do the job of being a access
point with a dial on demand interface to a isp using an external modem.
Does anyone know if this is at all possible.? Waht I have in mind is
something like an Apple airport with built in modem. Is there anybody
there taht can help me? I have already got it converted to Linuxap V
20030831.16:21:01 with terminal and web interfaces.
n.b. would it be a simple matter to include a file manager , does
anybody know how to do this?
Regards,Dave.

The serial port on the Eumitcomm WL11000 card is notoriously bad. It
glitches so much that it's practically useless at 9600bps, much less
higher speeds. I doubt very much that using it for a modem backup would
work, which is really too bad because otherwise it would be a much more
useful device.

These boxes are way too limited for most stuff. 1MB Flash / 4MB Ram is
just too darn tight. I spent way too much time on these
bad boys before I went to Soekris. It is quite a bit more money, but
you get 64MB of RAM and a CF slot + you can shove a
200MW radio in it. The components are all industrial rated instead of
commercial. As far as adding a PPP type backup you can
pretty much forget it. As for a "File Manager", what would you be
managing? The files are sitting on a RO filesystem in flash
that is at 98% of capacity.

As for getting PPPD on there . . .
[***@tempe] /var/log<342>cat /usr/sbin/pppd | gzip > /tmp/pppd.gz
[***@tempe] /var/log<343>l /tmp/pppd.gz
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 92630 Nov 24 21:07 /tmp/pppd.gz

Your going to have to trim ~100K (compressed!) off the image. Plus . . .

[***@tempe] /var/log<345>size /usr/sbin/pppd
text data bss dec hex filename
179523 12032 44496 236051 39a13 /usr/sbin/pppd

This bad boy is going to gobble up some serious RAM if you try and fire
it up.

You can take zipslack, and hack it up for a 128MB flash, or even strip
it down or split it up and make a
really nice setup with lots of tools way too easy, and put the whole
thing together for under $250 on
soekris.

I'm running a custom soekris setup, and I can't find enough I care about
to eat even a 64MB flash.
